The filling of a vacancy for a Town Councillor
The resignation of one of the sitting town councillors has left us needing to fill the resulting vacancy
The first step in this process is to offer Chudleigh electors the opportunity to request a formal election. They do this by writing to the Chief Executive of Teignbridge District Council, who is the Returning Officer. If ten or more electors submit such a request then an election will take place by 29 November. I posted a notice to that effect on 30 September advising that requests for an election must be submitted by 18 October.
If there are insufficient requests to require an election to be held then the Council is free to co-opt to fill the vacancy. To facilitate this I will post a notice on our website, Facebook page and noticeboards during the week of 21 October. This notice will ask electors interested in becoming a councillor to email or write to me expressing interest in filling the vacancy by 29 November. Thereafter, those submitting an expression of interest will be invited to address the Council, probably at our January full council meeting. Councillors will then select the most suitable candidate.
