What is the bulky waste collection service?

Teignbridge District Council provide a collection service for large or heavy household items, such as fridges or furniture.

This is a chargeable service and must be booked and paid for in advance.

Bulky waste charges

We charge for each item of bulky waste collected.

Non-refundable booking fee

There is a £21 non-refundable booking fee on all bulky waste collections. Before making a booking please make sure you are certain, this fee is not refundable on cancellation. We are not able to refund if we attempt to make collection and are unable to due to accessibility issues, please be sure to read all the conditions of the bulky waste collection before proceeding


  • £8.50 per item in addition to the booking fee


If you are in receipt of council tax reduction (also known as council tax benefit) you may be entitled to a reduction of £8.50 on a fridge/freezer collection.

You will need to supply your benefit reference number (found on your award letter) in order to claim this discount.

Sofas and suites

  • three piece suite - 3 items
  • two piece suite - 2 items

  • 1 roll or bag - 1 item
  • underlay, 1 roll or bag - 1 item

Dining tables and chairs

  • table - 1 item
  • dining chairs (up to 6) - 1 item


  • stereos and speakers - 1 item


  • TV - 1 item
  • TV stand - 1 item

Wardrobes and cupboards

  • wardrobe (dismantled) – 1 or 2 doors – 1 item
  • wardrobe (dismantled) – 3 or more doors – 2 items
  • cupboard (per unit) – 1 item

Fridges and freezers

  • fridge (domestic appliances only) – 1 item
  • freezer (domestic appliances only) – 1 item
  • fridge/Freezer (domestic appliances only) – 1 item

Washing machines, tumble dryers and dishwashers

  • washing machine - 1 item
  • tumble dryer - 1 item
  • dishwasher - 1 item

Garden sheds

  • garden shed (dismantled) - 8 items

Garden waste

  • per bag - 1 item

Items we cannot collect

We cannot collect:

  • large double size/American style fridge freezers or fridge freezers with locks
  • commercial fridges or freezers
  • range style ovens
  • double sized garage doors
  • rubble, bricks, plaster or plasterboard
  • oil tanks or containers
  • vehicle parts i.e. engines, gearboxes, motorbikes etc
  • vehicle wheels or tyres
  • gas bottles
  • night storage heaters
  • chemicals or asbestos of any kind
  • DIY/construction/demolition waste
  • non-domestic household waste
  • electric beds
  • electric sofa/chair
  • pianos
  • bathroom suites (toilet, sink, bath, shower inc. shower screen)
  • UPVC/plastic doors, windows and doorframes

Conditions of the bulky waste collection service

  • in order to receive a refund for the items booked, cancellations must be received at least two working days before collection.
  • we can only collect up to 6 items with any one booking, with the exception of garden sheds (which are classified as 8 items). If you have more than 6 items you will need to book more than one collection.

health and safety access is at the discretion of the contractor (e.g. clear of obstructions, safe access, no steep/slippery steps etc.) and any items deemed unsafe will not be collected.

collections can only be made from domestic households.

collections cannot be made from allotments and small holdings.

house and garden clearances cannot be undertaken.

each household will be charged separately, no joint collections from a street will be made.

items must be able to be lifted by two men with a sack truck.

  • items for collection outside, must be covered to keep dry/protect from elements.

items must be prepared for collection, e.g. dismantled or uninstalled (contractors do not carry specialist lifting gear, or tools for this) and all items must be empty (e.g. no food in freezers etc.)

small amounts of garden waste can be taken, but must be bagged up and placed at the edge of the property. It will be charged per bag.

carpets are charged per roll or, if cut up charged per bag, and underlay is charged as a separate item.

garden sheds and green houses, no larger than 8ft x 6ft can be taken, but must be dismantled and will be charged as 8 items, i.e. four side panels, door, roof, floor and window glass.

Collection staff

Collections are made by ReFurnish, a charitable organisation that may resell the items they collect if they are suitable.

Collection staff always wear uniform and carry ID.

Please ask for proof of identity before allowing staff onto your property to collect your bulky waste.

Collections from inside your property

  • Collections are made between 9am and 5pm and no specific collection time can be given. Items that are to be collected from inside your house need to be available between these times on collection day.
  • You will be asked to sign a disclaimer if items are to be collected from inside your property.
  • This disclaimer allows our contractor to enter your property to make collection with no liability for loss or damage to your property howsoever caused.
