Most residents will be aware a vacancy has been created following the criminal conviction and sentence passed on Douglas Hellier Laing. This conviction resulted in his immediate disqualification from office.
To fill the vacancy requires us, firstly, to post a notification that a vacancy exists and advise electors that they have 21 days to write to the Returning Officer asking that a formal election be held. If ten or more electors make such a request then the District Council will be required to organise a formal election. The deadline for such requests expires on 10 January.
If there have been insufficient requests to trigger a formal election then the Town Council is free to co-opt a candidate in whatever manner they choose. Our intention will be to post a notice on our noticeboards, website and Facebook inviting expressions of interest to join the council by 31 January. Expressions of interest can be made in writing or by e mail. Potential candidates will then be invited to attend the full council meeting on 5 February where they will be able to address councillors, detailing what skills and qualities they would bring to the council. Following these addresses councillors will then decide which candidate to co-opt.
