Housing in Chudleigh:
When a developer submits a major application it is often said that the house types are not what is needed to meet the needs of residents. The difficulty with winning that argument is that we, along with most other communities, actually have no definitive data to support our arguments. We have some idea regarding the social housing need but only for those who have registered with Devon Home Choice. The truth is we have absolutely no idea of the type of market and affordable housing needed within our community. Consequently, the Town Council is working with the District Council and Devon Communities Together to organise a housing needs survey. In late March or early April a questionnaire will be delivered to every household in the community. This will be backed up with a public event at the Town Hall on the afternoon of Saturday 14 April. This event will be attended by Town Councillors, the Housing Enabling team at Teignbridge District Council (They are the people who negotiate with developers regarding the type of housing to be built) and the Devon Home Choice Team. This will give residents the opportunity to discuss housing with the experts and also to register with Devon Home Choice. As many of the local town councillors will also be present, residents will have the opportunity to question them on other local issues. Because this event will take place close to what was the scheduled date for the Annual Town Meeting councillors have decided to subsume the latter into this housing needs event.
