District Councillor Report

DOUG HELLIER LAING: DISTRICT COUNCILLORS REPORT FOR JANUARY 2016

Time flies when you are enjoying yourself and that is the case for me, the role is demanding, but has its rewards.

Since Christmas and the New Year I have been involved in assisting members of the community with planning issues, parking, concerns with dog fouling, commercial fan extraction, generator noise, arranging for repairs to the ladies section of the public lavatories, as well as assisting with the Chudleigh Colts Under 14 football team by way of a donation to help purchase wet weather jackets.

December saw me perched atop a ladder in Clifford Street hanging Christmas lights across the street for friends and neighbours and taking them down again in January. If you do not walk down Clifford street routinely, do so in December, the effort by residents making windows and the street colourful with Christmas lights and decorations is worth seeing.

I have to thank a ‘ gang of 4’ who keep me up to date on any number of issues to do with Chudleigh. Without their continued advice and direction, life would be so much simpler, but not as entertaining. I speak of David, Brenda, Barry and Sue who colonize Harveys on a regular basis for tea and cake and dispensing advice to unwary District Councillors who pop in for coffee.

I would like to use this article to elaborate on the wider role that I play, on top of being a constituency District Councillor.

As a member of the eight man Executive, and Portfolio Holder for Economy, Skills and Tourism I have a much wider remit, which involves working most days, in fact just like a full time job. As District Councillors we are required to wear two hats, one as a constituency councillor, and one for the whole of Teignbridge. As a member of the Executive, there is another hat, and that is working collaboratively with Exeter, East Devon, South Hams and Devon County on everything from the Economy, Housing, Tourism to Education to Regeneration . There isn’t space to cover everything but as a flavour, I have been involved in helping to resurrect the Tourism vehicle known as Visit Devon. I am trying to arrange for the Tourism Minister , Tracey Crouch MP, to visit and see our successes with the Pavilions and Fish Quay in Teignmouth, and try to get her onto the footplate of a steam train at the South Devon Railway in Buckfastleigh.

I spent an interesting morning touring the new town of Cranford, just outside of Exeter; being shown the new District Heating project that does away with individual boilers in the home, then another morning involved in the Low Carbon Task Force that is working to reduce carbon emissions across Exeter and into Teignbridge.

Quite a bit of my time has been spent with educators from South Devon College assisting with their new degree course on Leadership and Management, as well as working on apprenticeships and visiting training sites they run in Newton Abbot. Last week saw a round table discussion with senior educators from most of our colleges and Devon County Council looking at ways to invest in young people and how to help them complete their education ready for the workplace and/or higher education.

My final pieces of information are bit of a tease, and ones that I shall elaborate on next month. Teignbridge District Council are about to invest in an acquisition to transform Newton Abbot, but documents are not due to be signed for another few days so it must remain, for now, a secret. Likewise with Exeter, we at Teignbridge intend a Summer spectacular for the young people ( and young at heart ) at no cost to them. Young people are very important and we need to show them that as well as investing in their education, we recognize the need for relaxation and fun and we intend to deliver that for them.

As always, if I can be of help, contact me via Tel : 01626 854892 or 07869 066055 or
