This past month, once again, has been very busy, but I am much better at managing my schedule to ensure that I allow a decent amount of time for each meeting and not agreeing to too many on the same day.
You may recall that I attend the local Clinical Commissioning Group meetings, which are chaired by Jenny Turner who is a Chudleigh resident and practice manager for a GP practice in Dawlish. Jenny is an excellent Chair and manages to steer us all through the progress that the CCG is making. £28 million in savings are what the CCG has to make in the coming year, so quite a challenge, but one they are taking head on, elaboration of where the savings will be made, will be made clear at a later date.
I had a very nice letter from the Lead: Laura Jenkins, who thanked me for being a constructive friend to the group following my suggestions about potential use of Cottage Hospitals; earlier warnings about winter measures and Mental Health provision , especially for young people.
I was reminded of my intervention about Mental Health at a meeting of Chief Executives and Political Leaders, held to discuss the forthcoming Devolution bid, when John Hart’s ( Leader of DCC ) PA spoke to me at the recent TALC meeting, he reminded me of my prescient plea for better funding for Mental Health, which is on the face of it, is going to happen: time will tell on this one.
Staying with Health matters, at the recent meeting, again of Chief Executives and Political Leaders from all the South West, Bristol down to Penzance, I was nominated and appointed to the South West Ambulance Trust and NHS board. I will serve in this capacity, taking the points of view of the South West Council and likewise, feeding back to the same body the outcomes of board meetings.
With this Board position in mind, I advised the Chudleigh Town clerk that I would declare an interest when we discuss the purchase of a defibrillator, which was a suggestion I put forward following a discussion with Chudleigh residents.
In my role as Executive member with the Portfolio for Economy, I sit on three committees relating to the subject: Teignbridge Growth and Investment Board, Exeter Heart of Devon and Devon Growth Board respectively, they cover local, neighbouring and County involvement. To this, I now add the Exeter Growth Point and Enterprise Zone, which is a result of ever increasing and closer collaboration with neighbouring authorities.
Regeneration is also a new role for me, as I have been appointed to be the Lead Councillor for a major infrastructure investment here in Teignbridge, although I cannot elaborate, all will be made clear within the next week, when there will be an announcement by Teignbridge District Council.
Tourism has been a major interest over the past couple of weeks as we build on the industries need to consolidate its unified voice behind Visit Devon. We have appointed a consultant with wide experience to guide us over the coming months, Simon Fishwick who was until recently, the events and visitor consultant for Powderham Castle and Estates, is now leading Visit Devon. There have been two conferences of note, one at Woodbury for all of those involved in tourism in Devon, and a more local one at Langstone Cliff Hotel in Dawlish. I continue to work with tourist attractions closer to home, both small and large, progress is being made, but Chudleigh, and more importantly, the town council, need to recognize the need to improve the town centre aesthetics if we are to attract and retain visitors.
Staying closer to home, I have been active following up the concerns of various people and groups on traffic issues, road closures and dangerous levels of mud on Clay Pit Lane. The responses from Simon Pearson at Highways have been good, with a desire to resolve
all the issues as quickly as he can. Stuart Hughes, Cabinet Member for Highways at DCC has likewise been very helpful, after I spoke to him at County Hall.
Finally, although I could not make it to the recent presentation by GreenBlueUrban about trees and town centre planting, I understand progress is being made and that 5 years after I first raised the subject, it might finally happen.
