Last year the Town Council volunteered to become a host centre for this project. The project involves surveying the number of bats of all species in various areas. This gives the project a better idea of population size and the areas that are important for foraging. Being a host centre involves us in holding a bat detector which is loaned out to members of the public who are interested in monitoring bay numbers in their local area. We are providing the same service this year. T find out more and book a detector please go online at devonbatproject.org/devon-bat-survey.
The project has also kindly provided us with a grant of £2,000 to create a bat friendly garden at the corner of Rock Road and Parkway – specifically opposite Glen Spray and the entrance to the rock footpath. We plan to plant it with fragrant and insect friendly perennials, some climbing up trellis. There will be a curved metre-wide strip with an ornate bench at the centre. The garden will be open to everyone. This project will take a while to develop but we hope to have it up and running over the next year.
